Bold statement: A rising star is reshaping Queensland’s infrastructure landscape, one thoughtful public space at a time—and this is the story you need to read. But here’s where it gets intriguing: Kyle Jones isn’t just winning a scholarship; he’s signaling a shift toward design that truly connects communities.

News

Populous’ Brisbane studio is celebrating Kyle Jones, an emerging designer who has been named the Infrastructure Association of Queensland (IAQ) Future Infrastructure Leader Scholar for 2026. The award honors young professionals who show clear leadership potential and a commitment to shaping the future of Queensland’s infrastructure. Kyle stood out for his practical mindset, technical proficiency, and a passion for creating places that enhance how people live, move, and come together.

Kyle’s design philosophy centers on connection and belonging.

"My aim as someone who designs diverse public spaces is to ensure they work cohesively, welcome newcomers to our state, energize long-time residents, and entice visitors to stay longer and return again." This perspective informs his work in sport and entertainment venue design.

Kyle joined Populous in 2019 and is currently pursuing a Master of Architecture at the Queensland University of Technology. Based in our Brisbane studio as an Architectural Assistant, he focuses on crafting immersive spaces that elevate the emotion and experience of live events. Outside work, he lives for sports and live music, chasing the same energy he strives to embed in his projects.

Chris Paterson, Senior Principal and Director at Populous, notes that Kyle has already begun to influence venue design beyond Australia, contributing to international projects such as the Las Vegas Sands Arena in Singapore and Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong.

"We’re incredibly proud of Kyle and the value he adds to our team. His curiosity, drive, and commitment to community-centered design embody Populous’ core values. This scholarship recognizes his hard work, and we’re excited to see where this opportunity will take him."

The AU$5,000 scholarship provides access to senior industry leaders, professional development opportunities, and a platform to influence long-term sector thinking. It recognizes the energy and purpose Kyle brings to the Brisbane studio every day.

Congratulations to all the finalists: Adam Preston (TSA Riley); Akshay Doosa (SYSTRA); Marc King-Turner (Arcadis); Thien Chu (GHD); and Tim Crawley (SYSTRA).
