How good are they? What success have people had and most importantly for me - which works the best with the least risk of side effects?
Please no unfair bias here - just real experience and knowledge
Thanks,

I have used propecia only. I have thought about giving saw palmetto a try but it will never be better than propecia.
I won't try dutasteride until it is officially signed off by the FDA.

technically it IS signed off by the FDA. its just that its signed off to shrink prostates, not treat hair loss. this is the exact same state that proscar is stuck in. and hey, a lot of people here use proscar

getting an "answer" here is more or less useless. the best course of action is to go on propecia for 6-12 months and see if youre happy with the results. side effects are minimal. i repeat: minimal. they DO happen to some people, but in the worst case scenario you can stop the drug to stop the side effects.
the usefulness of saw palmetto is debatable. but its obvious that its nowhere near as effective as finasteride or dutasteride.
as for dutasteride, dont ask about it until after you've done your treatment of finasteride

Never used dutasteride. Blocking too much DHT is dangerous anyways, its there for a reason. The idea is to lower enough dht without getting side effects for the purpose of stopping further hairloss.
I have used saw palmetto and finasteride however.
Saw palmetto calmed my inflammation on my scalp if i remember rightly and boosted my sex drive. However it made me shed a lot of hair more so than finasteride. I got scared and abandoned this. The mechanism of action with sawpalmetto work differently to finasteride. So who knows what this is really doing to my body let alone hair. There isnt a lot of research done with sawpalmetto in regards to hairloss and it isnt fully understood. So your on your own if you try this. Furthermore it has list of possible side effects different to finasteride, which confirms that it works differently to finasteride despite blocking the formation of dht.
I experimented with this at different doses and only really got true side effects similair to finasteride when dosing at over 2ooomg (breast tenderness). Furthermore sawpalmetto isnt easy on the stomach and gives you smelly breath. Based on my findings with the dosage however it strikes me as a weak dht blocker that can probably slow hairloss down at best, but no regrowth. I have no way of knowing this for however as i only took it for a couple of months, which isnt long enough for a fair trial.
Finestride gave me fatigue, gyno, testicle pain and minor sheds. However it improved my hairloss at the crown and hairline, but only slightly. I used it for 5 months. The side effects were much more severe with this (apart from the shedding), but at least i understood what was going on.

Could you tell me why does it lower libido? It's easy to appoint that, but there's no such reason about libido decrease reducing the DHT.
Libido is maintained by Testosterone.

Currently I am using Saw Palmetto (160mg) and my hair is great, there had no side effects with this dose (160mg)
I used finasteride 1mg and 0.5mg (8 months) but I stopped because I had a lot of pain in testicles and brain fog

hmm, the effects of beta-sitosterol (the relative "active ingredient" of Saw Palmetto) appear to be at least three-fold. It inhibits both forms of 5ar (like Dutas), and apparently binds to androgen receptor sites (like probably RU58841 and Ketaconazole do topically) and is a phytoestrogen.
I have heard good stories of people using it, but then also fairly good stories of people using finasteride and stuff too. Who knows eh? Further research is required! ^_^

oh that's quite comforting that it's not just that which is causing the effects on your hair, I was thinking that might be the case as well.
I am currently trying to decide between Saw Palmetto and Finasteride. I've ordered 450mg tablets of SP off ebay so that's a start, and I'm using Ket shampoo anyway (sorry, I have a thing about calling them their real names and not brand names! lol). So, you reckon that SP and finasteride both work fairly alright, but finasteride gave you side effects? I mean I think it varies person to person what sides you get from both.
And you think the SP is what is giving you good hair? that sounds quite promising

Use a lower dose. It works best at 160 mg according to most peopel around here.

Been on Merck Propecia from Propeciapharmacy.com for about 10 years and it is great and has allowed me to truly keep my hair after I first noticed it thinning.
My regime is:
Propecia 6 days/week and Dutasteride 1 day/week
L-Lysine 1000mg 7 days/week
1000mg Saw Palmetto 7 days/week
1g of L-Glutamine 7 days /week
1g of l-Arginine 7 days /week
90g of protein 7 days/week
Nizoral shampoo
Wella Liquid Hair
L-lysine is supposed to enhance the effects of propecia and all I can say is that for me it has worked. In conjunction with the other things in the list which I use religiously everyday have kept all my hair when I know that I would have lost loads of hair by now. I am 36 and started propecia 10 years ago and would never not take it. Get the genuine stuff made by Merck, protein is from bodybuilding protein powders which I make into milkshakes and drink 3 times a day, (30g of protein per shake), do the rest that I do and I can't believe you won't get results. Not sure how much regrowth you will get, (some I think and experienced at the beginning), but prevention is better and easier than cure and the above is tried and tested for about a decade and totally works.

I seriously doubt that. I think lysine for hair loss is a ridiculous rip-off.

Wel guys let me allow to join yours discussion. I am using Rogaine foam 5% for regrowth (Temples) but I will add to my regimen also saw palmetto and S5 spironolactone lotion (I hope that EU airspace will be open that I could get my lotion ASAP :dunno: ) I already have saw palmetto 450mg tablets but I just realized that this is quite huge dosage so any idea how to use these tablets not to take 450 mg. But any way I am a little bit scared about using saw palmetto I hope that this is not some kind of "snake oil".
Best !

I don't know man. A rip-off is going a little far. I mean, l-lysine supplementation is dirt cheap. I don't know how anyone could be getting "ripped-off".
